Food & Drink Southsea Wanders

Sisters Cafe, Southsea

Sisters Cafe, interior, Marmion Road, Southsea

A new family-run cafe can be found in Southsea’s Marmion Road having opened it’s doors today – 31 October 2020.

Formerly Grace & Ivy, opposite Waitrose, Sisters is run by… funnily enough… sisters Sarah and Abby and has the full blessing of the former owners. Sisters Cafe has been operating out of a mobile unit on the Southsea Common over the summer and has been a welcome addition to the street food scene in the city.

The central-Southsea premises have had a gorgeous teal and navy paint makeover and feature a cosy interior adorned with driftwood and seasonal dried flower arrangements.

Sisters’ menu features brunches (booze optional!), doorstep sandwiches, loaded fries, main meals, Sunday roasts, cocktails and ice cream sundaes. Their Facebook and Instagram accounts tease us with pics of breakfast dishes such as veggie hash with fried egg, loaded fries and slow-roasted brisket for Sunday lunch. And even better, doggos are very welcome.

The night before the grand opening we were invited to an intimate evening launch with live music and a chance to taste the amazing food. After some fab acoustic sounds from Jake Bezzina of Blackfoot Circle, we tucked into brisket sandwich and buffalo chicken fries.

The brisket sandwich was loaded with onion and cheese, packed into a fluffy doorstep bloomer and came with a large bowl of tasty gravy for dippin’.

The loaded fries were a generous portion of potatoey goodness; crispy fries with juicy chicken pieces, pink pickled red cabbage, buffalo seasoning and a cooling dressing.

To finish I ordered a delicious espresso martini. For those who know me, you’ll know I’m not a fan of an overly sweet beverage, so espresso martinis are sometimes a bit of a gamble. I have even asked the bartender to leave out the extra sugar in the past (which didn’t go down well, I was told it’d be “too bitter, you won’t like it”) and my coffees are strong and short. But this was perfection – brilliantly boozy, great quality coffee and a nice foam top.

All in all a great experience. And I’ll definitely be back for an eat-in portion of the brisket fries I tried at Sisters Cafe van in the summer.

*Gifted* I received an invitation to the soft opening night at Sisters Cafe and enjoyed complimentary prosecco and food.
