Southsea Wanders: Pie & Vinyl

Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl is an absolute gem. You’ll find it set just a minute back from the seafront, tucked away on the vibrant Castle Road.

While you’re waiting for your meal, make time to peruse the record room at the back of the shop. They specialise mostly in new music and new artists, stocking albums released within the last two years. Different formats are available, but as it says on the tin, there’s a bias towards good ol’ vinyl. If you’re lucky you could catch an intimate live band performance of an evening – but get in early or you’ll be crying through the window at the lucky people inside. You can also sign up to the Pie & Vinyl Record Adventure, where you’ll receive a record every quarter, and some cool merch too.

And then there are the pies. Oh the pies. With a menu that changes seasonally and daily specials, you’ll be spoilt for choice. There are around 30 regular savory pies on the menu, including veggie, vegan and gluten free varieties, with a mixture of shortcrust, flaky puff or no pastry. Choose to have the pie on its own, or add ‘The Works’ (with creamy mash, minted mushy peas and gravy or liquor) or ‘The Whole Hog’ (my personal favourite, with all the trimmings of The Works plus a topping of crispy shallots and mature cheddar). Wash it down with a cordial or cup of Portsmouth Tea.

And on Sundays they’ve introduced a roast dinner in a pie – roast meat of the day with potatoes and veg, encased in a pie, surrounded by mash and minty peas, all sitting in a Yorkshire pud. Worth saving yourself for.

Quirky knickknacks, framed album artwork, mis-matched china, fringed lampshades and the greatest granny teapots you’ve ever seen, make the P&V dining experience even more unique. We salute you.
